No, we don't sell Kindles

Our Kindle Books website only sells the ebooks themselves, not the readers.

Incredible Connection sells Kindles in South Africa. However I believe the best place to buy a reader is on Amazon.com.

The price is under R1 000 at the rand exchange rate. Your Kindle will arrive already set up and you won’t have to link it to your Amazon account, and you will be all set up to purchase ebooks from Amazon straight off the reader. They deliver by courier, so delivery prices can therefore be high.

When you buy your Kindle, I recommend you buy a leather cover for it also. It helps to prevent it getting scratched if you plan to put it in your handbag. If you buy the two together, you only pay shipping once. If you are just using it at home, the cover isn’t necessary as they are pretty tough.

Kindle Specifications

6 inch or 9 inch?

If you are reading novels, the 6 inch screen is convenient for both reading and carrying around. If you plan to read technical documents and PDF files, then the 9 inch could be worth the extra price.

3G or just wi-fi?

South Africa doesn’t have many free wi-fi points, so I believe the 3G is necessary here if you plan on doing much travelling with it. It allows you to buy books directly off the Kindle, and even gives basic [although in South Africa fairly slow] internet access. You can read a newspaper or check gmail without having to pay data bundle costs.

If you travel in first-world countries like Europe, the US, Canada or Australia, wi-fi is available at coffee shops, public buildings and airports - you are less likely to use 3G.

Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire is a colour monitor and touch screen, ideal for reading magazines or for childrens books. However the 3G is not yet available in South Africa and there are very few magazines available to us (and they are all paid for in dollars). It has a short battery life - around 8 hours. It is not an e-ink reader (with the matt screen) but a normal tablet LCD screen.

I don't recommend it for South Africans at this time.
