A Tale from Zulu Folklore - The Crocodile and the Donkey.
The crocodile and the donkey were stealing mealies. Suddenly the donkey said, ‘Now I must cry.’
‘You can’t do that, the farmer will hear us,’ the crocodile said.
‘No, I must. It is time,’ the donkey said. He cried: ‘Hee-haw.’
The farmer heard them. He chased the crocodile and the donkey until they came to a river.
‘How can I cross?’ the donkey said. ‘I can't swim.’
‘Stand on top of me.’ The crocodile slipped into the water and the donkey climbed onto his back.
Suddenly the crocodile stopped swimming. ‘It is my time to sleep,’ he said.
‘You can’t sleep,’ the donkey cried. ‘I will drown.’
‘But,’ the crocodile said, ‘when it was your time, you cried. Now it is my time to sleep.’ He sank to the bottom of the river and the donkey drowned!
